Gisborne & Wairoa residents urged to prepare for possible power cuts tonight

Eastland Network this afternoon advised residents living in Gisborne, Wairoa and the East Coast to wrap up warmly and prepare for possible power cuts overnight.

Electricity was restored at 11.56am this morning, after snow in Hawke’s Bay caused widespread power cuts affecting all of Gisborne, Wairoa, and the East Coast. Electricity was also interrupted in Hawke’s Bay where Eastland Network’s faults call centre was one of the many businesses affected.

Eastland Network general manager Brent Stewart says the power cuts were caused by snow settling on the 220kV Wairakei-Whirinaki circuit between Taupo and Hawke’s Bay. “This is part of Transpower’s national grid, and not the 110kV lines owned by Eastland Network.”

Mr Stewart says Transpower staff had advised him snow was still heavy in the Hawke’s Bay area, and further power cuts were possible during the evening ahead.

“We’re recommending people prepare themselves just in case. Get out your torches and blankets, prepare an evening meal in advance, and perhaps fill a thermos if you have one. Charge your phone so you can stay in touch with friends and family.”

During power outages earlier today Eastland Network’s faults call centre in Hastings was also affected and was unable to receive calls. Updates will be posted on the Eastland Network and Eastland Group Facebook pages.
